HINDI CINEMA – DILWALE DULHUNIA LE JAYENGE
Dilwale Dulhunia Le Jayenge, the 1995 movie, directed by Aditya Chopra, remains a landmark in Indian cinema. One of the most talked about movies of its time, it still remains a favourite with all age groups, bringing both laughter and tears with every scene.
The movie follows the story of Raj, a rich, carefree, happy-go-lucky second generation NRI, and Simran, the daughter of Chaudhary Baldev Singh, who in spite of being an NRI is very strict about adherence to Indian values. The two meet on a month long Europe trip, and what began as fun and games, ends in love. But by the time they realize it, it is already too late, as Simran has left for India to be married to her childhood fiancé. (Remember what Shakespeare said about the path of true love never running smooth!) Raj leaves for India with a mission on his hands, to claim his lady love by winning over her whole family.
As of 13 April 2007, the film’s initial theatrical release lasted 600 weeks–more than 11 years–a world record.
The songs are very memorable, with people still humming along to Mere Khwabon Mein Jo Aaye, Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna, and Ruk Jaa O Dil Deewane. The famous Shahrukh-Kajol team’s spontaneity and sheer acting prowess made it a treat to watch.
Dilwale Dulhunia Le Jayenge remains a classic, a constant reminder to us that true love can, after all, overcome every obstacle.
