India: rising high on the fashion calendar
India consists of three or four main fashion hubs. From being a non-entity in terms of fashion when compared to Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai, Kolkata and Pune, today have become the most important fashion centres in India. Awareness aside, the fashion boom has a direct connection with the commercial boost to Kolkata , be it in retail, real estate or IT. These cities have never looked better. We’re attracting big business. We’re sorting out traffic problems, power, water and everything else. This general development has led to a lifestyle boom. The propensity to spend on clothes and pay more for the exclusivity and quality that a big label offers has really grown. Clothes have joined jewellery on the Indian consumers “big-spend” list. The major chunk of the clientele still comprises business families and wives of industrialists. From a handful of names like Ritu Kumar , and Mona Pali and Sharbari Dutta , today we have a whole new bunch of talented contenders to deal with – people like Sabyasachi Mukherjee( a household name in the country ),Kiran Uttam Ghosh, Abhishek Dutta , Anamika Khanna , Dev n Neel , Shantanu Goenka , Sayon Mitra , Bibi Russel etc who’v put the various Indian cities on the international fashion map by taking part in not only the domestic fashion weeks but also in the ones happening abroad in New york , Milan, London and Singapore.
