THE INVASION OF COMEDY

Bollywood 30/03/2008

Laughter is said to be the best medicine. That seems to be becoming quite important in Bollywood nowadays. With everyone cashing in on the comedy frenzy that has overtaken practically everything else, it’s easy to see that laughs are now working.
Comedy has recently been making waves in Bollywood. All one needs to do is just switch on the television set, and there is either some kind of laughter challenge showing, or a hit sitcom. Funny movies, are of course, aplenty.

The multiplexes and movie theaters have been chock-full of recent comedy releases. Bhagam Bhag, Golmaal, and Bheja Fry are just a few examples. Bheja Fry was made on a modest budget, but went on to gross crores at the Box Office.

The recent release, Partner, starring Govinda and Salman Khan grossed Rs 42 crore in the first week itself. Quite a staggering amount, isn’t it?

The success of this genre is partly due to the fact that if one comedy movie works, everyone else will try to hop on the band-wagon. Besides, comedy is a great stress buster- we live in dark times, and everyone would like to have a few laughs to forget the tension and stress in our lives.
Tanya Das, a student of Law, says, “Comedy has always been my favorite genre. I’d much rather watch a funny movie than a dramatic or serious one, any day.”

Move over tragedy, shift aside soap operas… Comedy’s here to stay!
