Tommy Hilfiger
Tommy Hilfiger was born on March 24, 1951 in New York. He is best known as an American fashion designer who’s “Tommy Hilfiger” and “Tommy” brands took the fashion world by storm. This series of clothing and apparel catapulted Tommy Hilfiger to world wide recognition and fame.
Tommy Hilfiger became a household name in American and international fashion alike.
He had started out in pursuit of his dream in international fashion from the age of 18, as he customized and resold jeans and bell-bottoms he bought at New York City in his hometown in Elmira. His first retail venture, The People’s Place was a favorite hang-out joint than a retail store for teens. And presumably, it soon went bankrupt. Hilfiger was then 25.
As he moved to New York City, he rejected positions in assisting Calvin Klein and Perry Elis in designing, as he had bigger plans in motion.
In 1998, Hilfiger designed for singer Aaliyah and had her in an endorsement deal. In 2005, CBS TV did a show called The Cut, where he chose his apprentice in designing from sixteen contestants a la Donald Trump’s The Apprentice. His company has also sponsored Ferrari and Team Lotus in the Formula 1 races. He is dating Dee Ocleppo and has four children.
Tommy Hilfiger, though being a star in the international fashion scene for a long long time, has had his share of controversies and criticisms. He had a rough showdown with Guns ‘n’ Roses vocalist Axl in a party. He has also been criticized of robbing his workers of benefits and making them work for lower wages and in sweatshop conditions.
Still, Tommy Jacob Hilfiger is a name to recon with in international fashion today, and os a star in his own right.
